Before and after....

Righty, this was inspired by a guy on a forum who showed a before and after. And id managed to find a few skinny me photos so figured i could do one as well. The skinny ones are from 2006 and the current ones are from about 20 mins ago. Off creatine atm (well, 2 days into a load) and was probably on it back then. Anyway straight to the pics.
Before, taken specifically to assess progress in the future (i only look at it now tho!)
On holiday a few months later (2006), better light means better abs but everything else looks a bit skinnier which is good for better contrast.
To be perfectly honest, i dont know how different i actually look from now and the first pic, the second pic has more significant differences. I just look shorter and less ripped now...Bad times. But i seem to have grown lats with is nice. No change in traps and even arms look the same.... LOL. I suppose its because there is no bench mark to compare pics. Its like looking at a picture of franco columbu and saying he looks as big as arnie where as arnie is much much bigger but proportionally they are very similar. Pics are always hard to compare and contrast without seeing real life. Even the smallest bodybuilder looks massive in pics because of the perfect proportions. (anyway, enough excuses, onto the numbers).

The differences on paper are significant: about 220lbs (16ish stone) to 300lbs (21stone). Height obviously stayed the same at 6 foot 4.
Arms from about 15inch (maybe even less) to 19.5 inch now (my forearm at 15.5inches cold is probably bigger then my guns back in the day). Neck has gone up about 4 inches as well and waist has gone up from a svelte 32 inches to about 40 inches. Bf% has gone up from probably around 10-12% to about 23-25% now (im adamant you can still see abs tho!!).

So despite the similarity in pics, they are different. And the massive gain in weight despite the similarity in pics prompted me to find some lower body pics as well. When i started to train, i fell in love with squats over everything else (just a year ago my deadlift was half what it is today, i thought i was 'too tall' to deadlift, what a load of crap). My upper body has always been mediocre. Only got lats recently and for my weight and height my guns are relatively small. However, i've always had quite chunky legs. So here we go:

Before, on the same holiday as above. In some nice canterbury rugby shorts.

Now in some nice canterbury rugby shorts.

It would be funny even if those were the same shorts. They are the same make. However in the top pic they are 32/34 inch waist. In the bottom pic they are 40inch waist. My leg currently, is JUST smaller then my waist was back in the day (currently about 31inches at the top of the thigh).

Overall i think the majority of my weight gain has been lower body and arse (your not getting a pic of that). For this reason i generally have to wear 44 inch waist jeans just to get them round my legs and arse and then need to wear a tight belt to stop them falling down (my waist is chunky, but its not quite 44" yet).

Hopefully my upper body will start to catch up proportionally though my training is still very leg heavy. However the deadlifts have started to help me thicken up my upper body as well and really added depth to my back. A funny fact: I can actually do more chin ups now (around 10 wide arm, full lock) then i could back in the day, which i'm quite proud of. I feel as long as i can always do around 8-10 reps it'll be good as i'll have gained weight therefore got stronger.

Well enjoy, its a bit of a laugh anyway. Lolfail.

  1. Good stuff mate, I think both your before and after shots show some pretty decent fitness. Surely in your "before" shots you had some training?

  3. If you were still playing rugby, to an amateur level, during the season, how different would your training week look?

  5. Impressive transformation, though lets assume:

    Start: 100kg @ 10%
    End: 131kg @ 24%

Then 10kg fat mass, 90kg lean mass vs 31.5kg fat mass, 100kg lean mass.

That's a 10kg gain in lean mass, a 1:2 ratio of muscle to fat. I'm sure strength has gone up hugely but I'd imagine if you dieted down now to around 115kg you'd look fantastic.
